Re: Help_carb settings_poor pick up after revving to c.4,500

I spent quite some time on this issue with my 500. Assuming you have balanced the carbs, my money would be on the pilot jets being too big. With the way the Dell Orto carbs work, adjusting the pilot mixture with the screw only affects idle and can leave you with an over-rich mixture in the progressi...

Re: Armours stainless exhausts or tart up the black ones?

Hi Guys, I wondered if anyone has any updates on the Armour question. I would really like to replace the headers on my 500, they are deeply pitted and the chrome is a distant memory. I have heard the same comment which Paul Compton made above, that Armour's fit is a bit variable - but I did hear tha...

Re: Left side shift

Hi Rick, I do sympathise, I well remember the trauma of trying to adapt to a L/H gearchange all those years ago. If you try to change down with the brake pedal it’s quite scary! All the same, I would recommend persevering with it, you’ll find you can quite easily switch between the two and it’s a us...

Re: The gearbox project begins

Congratutacion Joe! So in the end the only thing you changed in the gearbox was the new cluster with its selector mechanism. I´m not sure wether I know what piece is this. Do you have a foto of it? norbert Thanks Norbert! When I mentioned the selector mechanism I was referring to these two assembli...

Re: The gearbox project begins

Success! I finally finished off the reassembly yesterday, after all the tedious faffing about with carburetters, throttle cables, choke cables and all that peripheral stuff. The engine started instantly as it always has and it sounds great. Well, it does now that I've tightened up the exhaust clamps...

Re: Winter project

Good progress! I also had a mid-point "notch" on my K2 steering, which turned out to be caused by the steering damper, which was full of lumps of rock-hard old grease. It cleaned up well and is perfectly serviceable, but I have never put it back and I have never been aware of any problem. ...

Re: The gearbox project begins

Thanks guys! Adjusting the float on the rockers is one of those jobs which is embarrassingly obvious once it's been explained! Now done. I only managed to get a couple of hours on it today, but it's coming on well and starting to look a bit like a motorcycle again. I won't get much chance tomorrow, ...

Re: The gearbox project begins

An update at last! I finally got the heads and barrels back from the engineers on Friday and have started to reassemble everything. Just for reference, with the crankcase in the frame, you cannot install the rear cylinder barrel or head. If you support the engine with a jack, remove the front mounts...

Re: Possible disc replacements

I saw those discs at NLM and they are very nice indeed, though at about £150 each they should be nice! I'm not sure if they still have them however, when I was last there they had none and they showed me some fresh ones they have, very similar to the Morini originals and still over £100 plus VAT. I ...

Re: Presentation and electrical wiring doubt

Hi Jose, I am not sure that I understand your question, but on the Morini, there is a centre-tapped alternator stator. I know it sounds unusual, but the centre tap (red) connects to the battery and the two other wires (yellow) go to the rectifier/regulator. The other connection on the regulator goes...

Re: Winter project

Your K2 is a little different to mine, a 1985 model, imported from the US: http://jgweb.org/morinik2/oct_17_1.jpg This one is very low mileage, but had been sitting unused for many years. Like you, I had starter issues and the oil was jet black and smelly. I had to do all the usual maintenance type ...

Re: 500W

Hi Steve, I don't even try to add up what it costs! Restoring a classic bike is never a cheap option in my experience, but I enjoy doing it and that's about as good a justification as I can come up with. My 500 has frame number 500W 03032 with a year of manufacture of 1978. As received it looked lik...

Re: The gearbox project begins

I promised an update, and I must start with an admission that the latest setback was largely my fault. After assembling the primary after fitting a new oil pump nut, I turned the engine over a few times, as you do and noticed a faint scraping noise on each crank revolution and covering about 30 degr...

Re: The gearbox project begins

Thanks for the replies guys, a lot of common sense there. I have now replaced the nut and doing it up was a LOT easier with the engine back in the frame. I stuck a steel rod through the holes in the front engine plates and that formed a secure stop for the holding tool, so I could now get two hands ...

Re: The gearbox project begins

harrymuffin - the special socket I have is good quality, some kind of hardened steel and seems accurately made. The only problem is that it really needs two hands to use it because you are applying the torque too far out from the nut - I'm sure you know what I mean. I just received the new nut in th...
