Update, commutator re surfaced, connection to fields re made and case cleaned and painted which I'm sure made a big improvement. Starter works I think better than it ever did but I would still look for a replacement brush assembly as they are a bit on the short side.

Starter Brushes
Please does anyone know of a supplier of the brush assembly for the starter as fitted to the Dart. Mine has burnt out one of the brush connections to the field coils and although probably recoverable, would be better starting with a new assembly.

Re: Dart trouble
Hello MM again, I've only just seen your post about the plain bearings. I've had a very close look at the flywheel side bearing and it looks fine, I've not had the rods off the crank preferring to leave well alone as the fly wheel side is fed from the same oil that passes the through the big ends an...

Re: Dart trouble
Hi MM, yes I did see c3 on the bearings when removed but at time of posting I didn't have the cases split and no markings visible. A "friend" did suggest the dishwasher for cleaning the cases but I'm told it can blacken aluminium. However it was the likelihood of domestic /political proble...

Re: Dart trouble
Crankcase now split, all stripped out, only damage seems to be the main bearing and everything is relatively clean without too much debris. Just need it all washed out, parts ordered and reassembled. Rear engine mount to repair so may paint frame parts before refitting engine.

Re: Dart trouble
Hi Mark, it is a 350 Dart and I did realise that they were deep groove ball bearings but thanks to both of you for telling me they were c3 clearance, I might have missed that. The bike by the way probably had stood for some 10 years or so before I got it and obviously I had no control over the way i...

Re: Dart trouble
Thanks Mickeymoto for that, I do use simply bearings and find them very good. I just wondered if there was a known best bearing for this application. On the other subject yes I could agree ugly but I would have to add very reliably functional.

Re: Dart trouble
It's taken some time to get to stripping the Dart engine and it is the drive side crank bearing cage broken up. Hopefully just the bearing needs changed but I will be looking at all the others while I'm in there. Everything else looks really good and bears out the recorded kilometres of around 42000...

Re: Dart front tyres again
I've used Heidenau front and back but the local tyre place couldn't get them so I had to get them off the net and he fitted them. I've only ridden them on two outings (see other posts), they seem OK although I've not pushed them. Also not as pretty to look at as some of the more main stream manufact...
