Re: Think I'm going to admit defeat.........

Eureka - maybe.... After 3potjohn's carb fettling earlier this week I decided to work through the 9 options on the Sachse ignition unit again yesterday evening. Fortunately I went through them in reverse order because it fired on no.8, ran smoothly and as importantly restarted. This morning it start...

Re: Think I'm going to admit defeat.........

Is there still a definite spark? And the chokes definitely working and the slides are not hanging right up . Also if you pull the green wire off the back of the ignition switch it still will not start? Can it be bumped down a hill? Happy to help if can but not this weekend unfortunately. Mark- what...

Re: Think I'm going to admit defeat.........

Hi, I think Mike means the needle valves that control the flow of petrol into the carburettor float bowl So may be he is thinking that you started and ran it one day and then left it, but now there is no fuel. I have had these needle valves jam up with goo, which being yellow/brown is hard to see a...

I changed plugs, leads and caps. The needles look good, barely worn, have tried various heights.

Think I'm going to admit defeat.........

After spending the last few months trying to get my Strada to start and run consistently I'm getting to the point where a) it's not fun fettling anymore, and b) I've realised I just don't have the engineering talent to work out what to do when I don't get the results the blue book, Youtube, etc say ...

Re: Bikes for sale

I do not know what to say. All I can see is a giant scrap yard, like those I used to visit to find a spare part before we all became rich. You know, the one with an Escort clutch master cylinder in the car at the top of five cars balanced on top of one another. Ah the good old days :D Cortina Mk1 p...

Re: Removing cylinder head bolts

Excuse my ignorance, but having looked at various drawings I cannot for the life of me work out what the Allen bolt does! The pushrods on my engine can be removed with it in situ - does that mean something is missing if the bolt is supposed to secure them in some way? Helps seal the head gasket rou...

Re: Removing cylinder head bolts

I always stuff some paper towel or rag in to the pushrod tunnel while taking the socket head screw out, and when putting it back in. You won't forget to take it out because the push rods won't drop in until you do ;)[/quote] Thanks - I took one look at those holes and then the Allen bolt, grabbed so...

Re: Removing cylinder head bolts

The allen bolt should be eminently removable with the engine in the frame. A magnet is useful if it drops down. That is assuming it cones undone easily going on your experience so far. John Planning to have a go tomorrow, hopefully it'll all be plain sailing and I can have a look at the valves then ...

Eased the bolts off! I can tell the Allen bolt could be challenging to remove with the engine in the frame though.......
