Re: Fuel taps??

Yes Mark, it can be stripped down - a useful exercise to understand how it works - but a word of warning. Be careful unscrewing the tap from the tank - the seal on that thread has not been broken for 30 years. Have some fibre washers handy in case of leaks on reassembly. There is a thin locknut betw...

Is this really a Morini 250 single?

Just spotted this on the bay. Not seen anything like it before. Is it a Morini?

Checking fuel flow

Am having problems again with starting, though this time I suspect I have a blocked fuel pipe. Cannot remember which way to position the manual tap for reserve, and which for normal. Bike starts and runs ok when the lever on this tap is vertical (pointing down), so I'm guessing this is the reserve p...

Re: 1982 500 Sport

Paddy, I would be interested in the stator if you end up selling the spares separately. Am in Northampton so it could be quite a nice excuse to get my 500 out for a ride up to Quorn.

Re: LED idiot-lights and other joys

I had the same issue of the idiot light only working on one side. The way I solved it was this: Wire up the indicators to the idiot light so both LH and RH feeds are attached to the same (+ve) leg/terminal of the idiot light. The other leg is connected to earth. Now this will make both indicators fl...

My ignition coil measures 236 ohms. Am now planning to rewind it to get it up to 300 ohms. Have purchased the wire from my local Maplins - they had it on the shelf at £8.40 for 250g of 0.125mm solderable enamelled wire. Just need to pluck up the courage to start the job - this bike is my daily runa...

Starting problems

Currently experiencing problems getting the bike started - once going, it runs fine. Each time I get on the bike, it seems to be a lottery whether it will start or not. When it won't start, I try bumping it, and eventually it gets going (but this can take up to 30 mins and a lot of effort). When it ...

What state is your battery in? I know that the way the system works, this shouldn't affect the starting, but I find that when my battery is low on charge the bike is a pig to start. Recharging the battery overnight seems to cure that.

Mark, Have you considered that your speedo drive (in the front wheel) may be geared for kph, so where you think you are reading mph on the speedo, the speed indicated is actually kph? If that is the case, I believe that NLM do a converter. Can you give us an idea of the difference in indicated / act...

Tubes from air filter to oil recovery box

My bike does not have the flexible pipes (part 5) or the pipe fittings (part 4). Instead I have a blanking piece (looks like a big plastic screw from above) where the pipe fitting would go in each side of the airfilter. Will this affect the running of the bike, or the effects of the oil recovery sys...

Brake fluid turns to sludge if not changed often enough. If your's has not been changed recently, or you are not sure if it has or not, then change the fluid now. It's a relatively cheap thing to do, and would need doing sometime anyway, so you have nothing to lose. Hopefully the problem will then g...

Paul has pretty well described the process, but I think we need to clarify a couple of points. I think that we all understand that by turning the throttle on the handlebar, we raise some cylinders in the carburettors, and that then increases the flow of air/fuel mixture. When the throttle is closed,...

You will have either destroyed the battery or the rectifier, or both. I think that the rectifier would go first, thus saving the rest of the charging circuit. The battery itself is fairly easy to check. For the rectifier, and the rest of the charging circuit, check out the document here: http://www....
