Re: Starter clutch slipping

Surflex sugested Mdina... They may not have any in stock, but presumably they have an account in order to order the clutch sets. Many thanks Paul, Mdina do have them and they are in stock now. Somewhat against my better judgement I've ordered a set (£106!!) so we'll see what happens. I've given the...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

The shoes when thrown out have a 'leading' effect or a mild wedgeing into the drum. Thinking logically, it could just be that the shoes are simply not spinning quickly enough to grip/wedge onto the drum and therefore simply go round wearing themselves out and glazing over. Have you checked the brus...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

The shoes are still in production by Surflex. Hi Paul, Do you know of a supplier? I've had a good search today without luck. By the way, I take your point about the battery, cables, relay etc being in good health. I've ordered some new cable and eyelet connectors to replace the 40 year old ones. Th...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

Very interesting read. I have been keen to get a starter on my Camel. I've been in contact with 2 members here regarding the possibly purchase, but have not herd back. Would you guys recommend fitting one? I would only be interested in getting a very good condition one. What do you think ? I have a...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

Thanks harrymuffin. Just to check that I've understood you, do you mean a bit of steel dowel sticking out of the tip of the shoe, sort of parallel to the spring? I think there is enough space there and I guess it would increase the weight of the shoe. I don't suppose you've a photo of one you've don...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

A quick update - Stein Dinse tell me that this part is no longer available. If anyone knows of another source, do let me know!

Re: Starter clutch slipping

Morning everyone and an apology for re-raising the issue of a slipping starter clutch. Mine seemed to be a lot better after cleaning and de-glazing the starter shoe linings, but it has got worse and worse again to the point that I usually have to kick-start the bike. I have checked and cleaned every...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

I hadn’t noticed that this thread had gone on so far. My starter clutch seems to have settled down again for no obvious reason, so at the moment I am ignoring it! I used the Morini forthe Moto Piston Rally again this year and although it did slip briefly a few times, it never failed to start the bik...

Re: led headlight upgrade.

Interesting thread! I wasn’t aware that LED headlamp bulbs were illegal and I must admit that I assumed they were OK so long as they met the MOT requirements. I fitted the Paul Goff LED bulb and went along to the MOT with a normal halogen bulb up my sleeve. I asked the guy to be as critical as he li...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

harrymuffin - thanks for checking your spare starters, much appreciated. As you know, checking the fit of the shoes in the drum is a bit of a palaver by the time you remove the sprocket and shoes, remove the back plate from under the shoes, remove the flywheel and try the fit on the bench. I will ha...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

harrymuffin - thanks for your reply. These linings were a good deal thicker to begin with, but I had to reduce them significantly for them to fit into the drum. As I said above, I did my best to profile them to fit with full contact and to be fair, they worked perfectly for a good 18 months before t...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

My 500 had the same problem. Graunching on starting. Refurbished everything, no joy. Changed the battery and starter restored to rude health! It needs a fair whack to engage and turn the flywheel on the slippery ring supplied... :) Thank you for that, I'll check the battery and charging. That could...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

When I had the shoes re-lined, they were too thick to enter the drum, at least on the leading end of the shoe. I spent some time with a file and emery paper trying to profile the shoes to fit as well as I could. Of course when the drum is in place, you can't see or feel the linings (or the shoes, co...

Re: Starter clutch slipping

Well I took it apart this afternoon and this is what I found: http://jgweb.org/500_morini/starter_clutch_1.jpg The starter clutch assembly looks OK, everything in place, plenty of lining material and all the pivots nice and free. So far so good. http://jgweb.org/500_morini/drum.jpg The "drum&qu...

Starter clutch slipping

Has anyone experienced a problem with the starter clutch slipping? Mine has started doing this in the last few days. When I first re-commissioned the bike I had to overhaul the starter motor, replace the (broken) chain and get the clutch shoes re-lined. It's always worked well until this slipping st...
