How many New Yorks in the USA?

Post by Tanshanomi »

Over the years, I have found lots of 3-1/2s, 500s and even a few 250s, Camels and Excaliburs for sale, but I've never seen a New York offered in North America. Are they really that rare? My first love is the Sports and Stradas, but I like cruisers and if I were to find a New York, I'd HAVE to make it mine.

The New York is along with the Coguaro 501, 1st and 2nd Series Camel, Dart 400 one of the rarest Morini's on the globe and even outer space, numbers in between 200 and 400, so i am told.

That makes them even more rare then 175 Settebello

So you can figure out they are as rare as hen's teeth, even in Europe

And Hans from The Netherlands has one for sale: hombre@xs4all.nl

Arrgh! Don't tell me that...I can only imagine how much it costs to ship a bike from The Netherlands to the U.S.

Should it be a New Amsterdam in the Netherlands?

I emailed him and got very excited...until I got quotes for shipping it. The cost of importing (not just shipping, but bringing it over for good) is beyond what I can reasonably spend on it. I felt like the Lord just drew a line through one of the items on my bucket list.

So good I've owned them four times, and counting: New York, New York...

To resurrect an old thread, based on the estimates of the number of New Yorks that were made I've owned at least 1% of them, perhaps 2%. I'm also aware of the dwindling number of Excaliburs and have an odd amalgamation of Excalibur frame with New York running gear as my main New York currently.

MdinaItalia probably has spares for same that were removed from another 1% to 2% of the original population from the days when NLM used to buy lots of Moto Morinis and import them by the lorry load into the UK.

I'm curious whether there's ANYONE else still riding a New York who also reads this forum - do please let me know. Also if you've got some New York bodywork, the amalgamated bike would suit a fresh suit of clothes, someone in their wisdom chose to paint over some of the New York markings.

Hmmmm, I'll decline your generous invite as it looks like the only group ride would be me on several of my New Yorks! that doesn't get me any points in the current MRC competition so I'll continue as a member of several of the other groups. However, as and when you fancy a New York I'll consider you for the cruiser group.

Just think, the Products Secretary could stock bandanas, leather chaps and tassle leather jackets along with cowboy boots.

Only if you and Steve are going down the YMCA route. New York is on the East Coast... and let's quietly forget where Excalibur is for now - the hour is not yet upon us!

I know there is another reference there but I don't get it! I never saw any films after the Holy Grail or 4 weddings etc.
But Julian, the section might not be so small after all? With a little stretching of the rules-in the interests of exclusivity of course-you could allow membership to all those using Excalibur or New York engines in Sports/Stradas/Camels etc. It would even allow me to join! (you may want to keep that quiet though-don't want to put anyone off, do we?)
And yes I know, you never were a barrel puncher or fishhead.

YMCA was filmed in New York City https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y.M.C.A._(song) (you can watch and listen to it while you're reading the rest of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS9OO0S5w2k)

The clobber you (Steve) want the club to provide are mainly from the 'Wild West' hence the West Coast. And you may well have had a well-spent youth watching the many cowboy films. In my distant memory, the sword excalibur appears when the need arises - however that hour is not yet upon us. Quite why Moto Morini chose to call the earlier custom bike an Excalibur is beyond me. The New York reference is more obvious and direct at least from my perspective as they wanted the bike to appeal to people who like american-made cruiser bikes such as Harleys.

I do like your suggestion of opening up the interpretation to include those who use 501 engines in their bikes that came from the fine cruiser models. That leaves the Coguaro riders to setup a subgroup that intersects with both the cruiser group (the frames and engines are similar) and the green lane group...
