Rebuilt brake calipers

Post by SteveMRC »

Is it normal for a caliper, freshly assembled with new pistons and seals, to leak for a week or so and then stop. :?:

I had to rebuild the rear one on my daily commute DR650. I soaked the new seals in fluid overnight, put it all back together, went for a ride and noticed a small drop of fluid underneath.
Took it off the bike and totally cleaned any stray fluid from the caliper, still leaked.
It was only a small drop after each ride and the brake was working fine so I put up with it awaiting a second hand one I had won on ebay. Of course when it arrived, my original one had stopped leaking :o

Does it really take almost two weeks for the seals to swell and seal correctly?

My answer would be no!. I have fitted many piston and seal kits, mainly on cars, with no problems. It may be that some fluid is still present under the dust seal and is still weeping out when it gets hot.As you mentioned-keep a close check on it for a day or two just to make sure. cheers.
