Stored Batteries

I just checked two batteries which have been off bikes for a couple of years and found that the electrolyte is down by a half!
Sure water evaporates over time but batteries are closed boxes with only a small ventilation opening and isn't sulphuric acid hydroscopic?
Are these batteries still usable? Do I just top them up with distilled water or do they need extra acid?
