Coolant coming out of top of filler cap???

Post by romeo-corsaro »

Hello again everyone, I have another issue on my corsaro veloce, it happened for the first time last week.. was going round my route got about half way round when I noticed spray coming up from the coolant filler cap (the white tank on the left hand side under the handlebars) *I take it that's the overflow tank* anyway it looked like it was coming out of the pin hole sized hole on the filler cap so I rode it home slowly and kept an eye on the engine tempreture which didn't rise at all which was good, it was very annoying because it had gone everywhere! all over the frame.. all over that side of the engine.. and all over my leg lol. so cleaned it up then took the cap off and checked the level, it was right up to the neck of the bottle! so I left it overnight and checked it again the next day and it had gone down abit so I took a little out anyway and thought that would be the end of it as I assumed the problem was it was just to much coolant in there and being a warm day and being given a good thrashing it just got abit hot and expanded and shot up to the cap, went out on it again this evening got half way round again and looked and saw a tiny little bit dribbling out which I wasn't realy worried about but then about 10 miles later it was doing it again! spraying up everywhere and when I pulled up back home there was loads gushing out.. so again I had to wipe it all down then checked the level and again it was upto the neck of the bottle again! can anyone help me? I cant work out why its doing this?? thanks, Ryan.

Hi I had a same issue on brand new Corsaro. But for me it was probably only overfilled cooling circuit. I forgot to check it when geting it from dealer and when I arrived home, the bike was covered with the pink shit  . Cleared it immediately, removed the liquid from reservoir to be below the indicator of to filling and now it is perfectly fine. No overflowing since then.

Your problem will possibly be a faulty cap, when it does not keep some pressure, the coolant can pop out. My guess would be, that check/cleaning or replace of this cap will solve your problem.
If it does not, there could be other problems:
-Filthy and blocked inner tubes of radiator obstructing normal coolant flow (can be clenaed)
-old coolant (can be replaced)
-faulty head gasket (this is not the most likely problem but definitely the worst scenario)

hello again franco, oh did you realy! well that's good yours is sorted then, I was thinking that fingers crossed the filler cap just needs changing but I cant find a spare one anywhere? also when I checked the handbook it says 'the level must be between the min & max mark' when I next looked at the bottle I could not see any markings at all? do you think for now I should take some more out? its just so frustrating going out on it knowing you could be turning back home early and would have to wipe it all down again! lol.. so annoying.

Hi Romeo,
the reservoir on my MY2012 corsaro is a little different from the one used on older ones. It is painted black and you shoul have white one. Anyway the minimum and maximum level should be indicated on both versions. You could see horizontal lines of plastic raised slightly above the surface, and the coolant level should be between. Anyway if you cant see the levels, just leave the reservoir filled to half of its height, it should work ok.

Regarding the spare cap, I am quite sure you can find alternative with same diameter. Take your cap and visit some suzuki/honda/yamaha/ducati dealers to find suitable one. In most cases there is only weak spring holdind the seal rubber.

BTW: you can find service manual somewhere here on forum and there is depicted the reservoir with levels...

thanks for all your help franco! realy apprieciate it.. I think what I am going to do is book it in at my local Italian bike specialist and have all the coolant changed as my friend has said I might have air or water in the system which is whats making it boil up to the cap and coming out, also yes I will do that I have a big Suzuki dealer near me so I will pop down there soon and see if I can get a similar one, also yes my mine is white not black.

If you need a new radiator cap (cheap enough so worth replacing just in case probably) then it should be the same as fitted to some KTMs:
KTM 1.0 bar Radiator Cap LC50, 2001- KTM part number 45135009000

That info came from the parts interchangeability list on the club website, which you may find useful:
