My Strada

Post by George 350 »

Hi All,

Bought this Strada off eBay as a spares donor for my Sport 6 years ago.Didn't have the heart to break it in the end, (is just 24 bikes newer from frame number) but I didn't do anything else with it either until the end of 2011.
Much stripping, cleaning, new bits, plating, spraying later I'm nearly done. Just waiting for the correct kickstart back from the platers and to finish machining the indicator stems and I should be done. Engine runs with the new 'home made' ignition system.

Only 'bah' was that the seat cover cracked when I sat on it! Yep, hadn't touched the seat as it was perfect apart from a small amount of surface rust on the base, so I was going to use it 'as it was' but obviously 35 year old Italian vinyl has a limit to how flexible it can be. Next stop Leightons in Birmingham...

Shameless Plugs for other excellent suppliers I have used:
AE Pople - Speedo glasses and bezels
Hockley Enterprises (Southend on Sea) - All Chroming
Action Electroplating (Basildon) - Zinc plating
Vulcan Powdercoat (Basildon) - All the black bits powdercoated
Auto Effects (Barton Le Clay, near Luton) - Silver paintwork
NLM - Having all the missing bits and required bits when I needed them
Disco Volante - Stainless fuel cap

Apart from work done by those listed above, I have done all the rest myself.
Usual caveat - No connections with any of the above suppliers other than as a satisfied customer.

Now I have a pair of bikes just like the 1978 advert!

Beautiful, George. You can recreate the ad in your garage.

When you get the seat cover, please report back. I bought mine a few years back and only just fitted and it turns white in the wet or just with water spots - Leighton's are baffled and have offered to replace but it does clear up when dry. Must be our NZ rain.
Cheers,
Dom

You might want to consider buying a new seat from NLM. The seat foam degrades with age and the cost may be very similar if replacement foam is factored in. Nisa (the OEM supplier) only do the early short Strada seat however.

My new Sport seat has very good foam and very flexible modern vinyl.

Bought my seat cover from leightons some time ago but have yet to fit it. I was disappointed to see the script on the rear is smaller than the original. Is this the norm?

Had my seat done by Leightons a couple of years ago - seems identical to original in wording size, no sign of white spots and a lot more comfortable.....quite happy!

I bought a seat cover from leightons but the font was wrong, ie too small. I mentioned it to andrew last week but it appears the small font is all he is aware of. Not the end of the world but a pity to have to use the wrong type.. He has no plan to produce the larger script as it would prove too expensive. A point worthy of note if originality is paramount to those of you with early 350's.

Leightons did a great job on my seat, January this year.
