I suppose what you can deduce from these replies is it's not an exact science. :)

Try calling NLM to see what they use. I know they use VW Mars red for the early Sports, but the later ones are more sort of crimson-y. People aren't being flippant about their answers: last year at the Morini rally we had a game called Fifty Shades of Red: throw a dart at a board with 50 squares of red card on it to determine the correct one for Morinis...

That's probably the science that Luigi used in the Factory at Bologna, Mark...

Good riding, now that Spring is almost here...

It was quite heavy and Tom was a bit upset.

Ruffled his feathers a bit, then? Toms' Dart is probably the lightest around despite the 501 engine. Never really saw the point in carbon shafted darts, but carbon Darts (he said with a little envy...)

On a serious note, and as Mark says, later Sports were a redder shade but not as dark as the K2 from the later 80s. Red fades over time (especially Italian reds in the sun) and photographs can be notoriously difficult to colour match. NLM might be able to match, and they'll also offer to paint a tank for you,

Good luck

When I had my 500 back in the 80's I used a Ford colour called "Sunset".

Hi Mike,

Re the original colour, as has been said above, there isn't really a 100% 'correct' colour.
If you want to touch in a scratch or similar, then there are paintshops around that will mix and match to a sample part you take to them. That way it should account for fade.

If you want to go back to as close to original as you can, (providing it hasn't ever been sprayed in the past!) use this route and get the colour matched to say the inside of a side panel, ie where UV light hasn't discoloured it.

If you are doing a respray of the whole bike, then have a look at Ford Radiant Red, or if that is too bright for you, then slightly darker is Ford Rosso Red, while VW Tornado Red is slightly darker still, but all suit the Morini.

For what it's worth, mine is now Radiant red and when I resprayed the tank 3 years ago I stuck with the same colour as to me it looks 'right', but my bike has also worn the other colour's I mentioned during the last 38 years.

No Morini owner would ever criticise you if you choose a colour that YOU like. Thankfully the MRC doesn't include too many rivet counters.

The colour is less important than proper hand painted pin striping :-)
