Exhaust black paint (original factory finish)

Post by George 350 »

Hi All,
Have lots of bits with the chromers at the moment, and they are being delayed as they are having trouble getting the coating/paint off the downpipes! (I wanted original style chrome downpipes not black) Yes, the stuff that lets rust form as soon as a cloud appears is resisting 24 hour baths in caustic soda and even (admittedly short term) dips in hydrocloric acid. Seems like each day only a tiny amount will come off. Apart from blasting (not an option as they need to be polished for plating) anyone know of a good way to shift this stuff?
Thanks

George

Were they powder coated originally? The only thing I can think of from my days as an air pollution inspector is heat - lots of it - literally burn it off! Not very practical unless you have the right type of furnace though. http://www.inghamspowdercoating.com/burnoffservices.php

If they are powder coated, Frosts do a stripper (so to speak)...

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm pretty sure it isn't powder coating (as I know of it) as it has to withstand some pretty high temperatures in use, and also when rust forms, it is only in little spots, not big patches bubbling under the paint/coating. Even where it wen't white near the exhaust ports it stayed in place. I'm beginning to wonder if it is some form of ceramic coating that they used. I'm still amazed that it is still on the pipes after 20-odd years. Shame they didn't use a finish like it on the rest of the bike!

Cheers,
George.
