Stuck clutch plates and stripped buttons

Post by tobydmv »

Well my strada project was making progress until I got to the clutch. The plates are stuck and I tried everything to free them. Kicking over with the clutch in. Running it on the centerstand with clutch in and then hiting the rear brake. Rocking it back and forth..nothing seems to work. The bike sat outside for a good while. SO I went to dissasemble and the buttons are seized and appear to have sheared their hold on the basket. So with pressure they just spin with the bolt. I imagine my only options are surgery at this point. I was wondering what your thoughts were of how to dissasemble. I have a good motor on the bench and will swap in the clutch assembly from it. Seems like a small chisel would shear off the button shrouds or maybe a small hole saw would cut around them. What do you think?

Sounds like the studs have sheared in the basket - basket out job. Paul has a 'how to' video on his Youtube channel somewhere.

My choice would be to not destroy anything not already broken.

Drill down the centre of the nuts/studs to release them. You may be able to grasp the nut with a set of grips, or you might need to make a little tool. The other way would be to weld a tab to the nut to hold it by.
