I have the marks on the crank and on the to pulley all lined up. I then fit the flywheel and the timing marks on that do not line up with TDC.

I've had the flywheel and stator off repeatedly, checking this, but just thought I'd check in with the forum. I'm setting tappet gaps to TDC rather than the flywheel marks. Correct? (on the intake stroke, of course)

Are the marks about 90° out?
If so, you might have an early rotor on a later engine or vice versa.
Certainly the pre-electric start 350's had a timing mark 'dot' on the crankcase in line with the crankshaft and gearbox sprocket centres, while the electric start models used the centre of the camshaft as a reference.
Don't know what the Camel/Kanguru did though, as they had a later style flywheel without the drum.

By the way, nothing wrong with using the TDC via a rod down the plug hole for the valve clearances, but I'm hoping that you are setting them on the compression stroke otherwise you will have very large clearances and no valve openings!!!!

Yup. The marks are around 90 degrees out.

I had this exact same issue. My 1977 Sport had the markings at 90 degrees out from the manual. An obtained copy of an older manual showed the difference in the two bikes. I had been using a copy of a later manual.

Anyways, tappets reset. Fitted NGK platinum sparks as recommended elsewhere in the forum. I'm praying it's sorted.

Good grief. I finished it off last night but didn't dare start it, after the weeks of work put in and my earlier experiences of this bike.

It is now an easy starter. It pulls cleanly through the revs up to an estimated 90 or so.

The indicators and horn have ceased to function, the front tyre needs replacing with something stickier, the tacho and speedo need a refurb but I no longer wish to set fire to it.

Result!

Rode it for several miles this afternoon, but kept within 5 miles of home and my tools, Ran like a peach.

So, I'll be more adventurous tomorrow.

Excellent, I done that same runs when I got mine finished. Such a light bike, great fun.
