And for those who prefer the Blue Peter experience, it seems there are a wide range of sizes available to purchase for not much money (£3) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/location-dow ... RMih3RNWnA The seller offers to make special sizes if none of their offerings suit your needs.

There were fifteen of us 16 year olds each given a 2" block of steel, the task was to file these blocks to 1 15/16" all round with all sides square and all sides perfectly flat and tested on a engineers plate with marking blue. We had 10 hours to complete the task. These 15 blocks ended up all different sizes and shapes, the lecturer then shewed us some of these blocks as they should be, we all took this exercise and other exercises to come more seriously. At the end of the full time year in the college we then went onto the easy bit, the degree course. Holidays in the works was where we were taught how to make things. Unfrotunately in this country all youths are capable of doing is exercising their fingers, on moronbie idiot phones and walking into lamp posts incapable of of doing anything for themselves. It is time we took a leaf out of the German engineering training programs which was similar to our own.

I share your views in many ways Harry - but the chap was only asking if anyone had a dowel handy. It is a motorbike forum, after all (even if I tend to 'wind-up' from time to time).
