Fork seal replacement

Post by Lewes96 »

Any tips for getting upper fork stanchion into lower leg with new seals fitted? Have just shredded a seal because the lip got squashed against the shoulder in the lower leg as I slid the upper in.

It is better to slide the fork seal over the stanchion, while the stanchion is already installed in the slider and best done this way. If you really must install the stanchion into the installed seal, I have managed by wrapping a piece of tough, thin polythene around the leading edge of the stanchion, with plenty of lubrication and carefully inserting. It is very easy to end up with the home made guide trapped in the fork and if the piece you use is not tough enough, will break, or if too thick will get stuck fast or wreck the seal.
