Oil age

Post by Lewes96 »

Anyone know if oil goes off? I have a can of GTX (recommended in the handbook for 3 1/2 ) but not sure of age. Could be 10 or 15 years.

I have a cylindrical tin of BP oil given to me by a landlady when I was in digs in Bristol in 1978.It was from when her late husband raced Aston Martins. Unfortunately she had given away “all the other stuff” the week before.
When I rebuilt a T160 in 1979 I sprinkled a drop into the engine by way of a blessing. This was repeated when I rebuilt my 350 about 3 years ago.I could not detect any changes in the way of colour or consistency. I suppose exposure to atmospheric conditions may cause a deterioration but it’s always tightly lidded.
Anyway that’s enough of that anecdote.
I would not worry as long as it has been sealed.
