Best 31/2 cam for all-round flexibility?

Post by simonnorthroad »

How is an M cam in a 3 1/2 motor with Strada pistons? Im not interested in hunting for top-end power, more interested in decent torque

For me the M-camshaft is the best one

The L5 (II) is very nice as well and obviously the best for 500/501 (a M won´t enter in them)
I´ve never tried a L5 in a 350.
I know some people who prefer the M inspite of the S in their 350 circuit runners. The great advantage of the M is a good tourque all the way without any leak at mid range, including easy idling. In my opinion combined with Nikasil barrels they make the best 350 ies (K2, (X2) and X3 Kanguros, Dart 350, Excaliur 350 (CS)).

All I know is that I found the.cam in my 350 K2 was neither fish nor foul. Never seemed to come on the cam. L5 for me. Works well in the 375 apart from a tendency to a mid range flat spot. Improved by larger idle jets in the PHBH28s.

Hi, I always thought there was a L5 cam in the K2?

As far as I know, the L5 was only in motors of the 501 (Camel and Coguaro, not in the customs).
The cams of the 500 and 501 have a samller "ground diameter" (350: 20 mm, 500/501: 17,5 mm). 350 cams like the M don´t fit in a 500 motor because they woudl hit the connecting rods, meanwhile you can mount a 500 cam in a 350.
I once had a 350 CS motor from a 350 Excalibur (nikasl barrels + M-cam) mounted in a 501 Camel frame. The best 350 motor I´ve ever had

The Excretia had a J cam. The 501 with a J cam is a torquey beast but it starts getting wheezy at the top end. My 501 would pull well from 30 mph in 6th gear.

In my sport, Phil Smith rebuilt it with sport pistons and an M cam, it was the strongest 3 1/2 I’ve ridden.

This may be an obvious question, but what would be the stock cam in the first 3 1/2 Sports. 75 model wire wheels drum brake.
Cheers.

Sport cam was used from the first sports up until the later K series bikes where they moved to the M cam.

There should be an S Stamped in the cam between the middle lobes, not so helpful if the engine is together, but easy to check what cam you have by measuring with a timing disc.

None of the Morini cams would be described as bad. I’d say they were all well developed and each has its merits. A strada cam is actually a lovely thing for less spirited riding. A sport you might have to keep on the boil a bit more.

When one cilinder is off, you can see with a dentists mirror the stamp on the cam  . If there is none it´s a strada one.

What effect do the high compression sport pistons have when using a Strada cam?
