I think the earlier 31/2s didn't come with indicators (not mandatory in the UK until about 1982 anyway) so the red light on the earlier models became the indicator repeater on the later models.

so the ignition light stays on even when running ?. not sure i have the wiring for that anyway

That light was on the earlier models and yes it stays on.

If your's is 1980 it probably didn't have that light... maybe, possibly
