Tyres

Post by Onecos »

I need new tyres (note... a Yank spelling like a Brit) for both my Morini 2C and my Laverda SF2. What do you recommend? I need to purchase tires available in USA. Just rebuilt the wheels for the Laverda. In doing so I trashed an old pair of Pirelli Phantoms. :cry:

There aren't too many 'sporty' tyres in the narrow sizes that suit the 2C. The best I found were Metzeler ME22;

2.75" front.
3.00" rear.

I use these on my 350, I push hard at track days and they are great...

And Avon recomends the same tires for the SF2....

Are the rims not as wide on the 250 Morini?

Ran Metzlers on my BMW for years but getting tired of replacing
them every 3500km.

The front rim is the same as a 350 at 1.85", but the rear is also 1.85" (350 is 2.15").

An Avon Roadrider 90/90 is already on the narrowest recommended rim at 1.85".

Whilst people have fitted quite wide tyres to the 250 2C (on standard rims) without any actual problems, I think they work better on the narrow tyres. With it's shorter wheelbase and lighter weight a 250 should make the steering of a 350 feel slow and heavy!

That's very high tyre wear! On a 250 the tyres will probably go hard before they wear out.

I've Pirelli MT 65s on my 250 and they seem fine. I'd like the opportunity to wear them out but there are so many other demands on my attention these days. . . . My 3 an' 'alf is still wearing Avons it had when I got it, the front one is ribbed, when did Avon stop making ribbed front roadrunners??

I had a very nasty moment on my 350 in the rain last week: an old and hardened front Michelin (although with plenty of tread) seems to be the problem. I've now got a new set of Avon Roadriders on their way to me - I don't think it's worth risking my pride and joy for the £100 cost of two tyres.

The MT65 was a good tyre, but it's only available in a very limited range of sizes now.

The Pirelli UK website lists;

Front/rear

3.00 - 17 50P REINF

Rear

3.50 - 18 56S
120/90 - 16 M/C 63S TL
90/90 - 18 M/C 57P REINF
90/90 - 18 M/C 57P REINF TL

and that's it!

No doubt tyre dealers have stock, but always check the date codes, some tyres may be years old and you don't know how they've been stored. In one case I found it to be under a very hot tin roof!

Roadrunners became Roadriders sometime in 2007.
Metzeler ME22
These are not available in North America. :cry:
