Flywheel wanted

Post by Sheikh »

I'm looking for a 500 flywheel to put onto a Camel. We're trying to improve low speed engine tractability and need the heavier of the two variations (weighing around 2.5 kilos). The number stamped into the inside of the flywheel is 315797. PM me if you can help. Thanks.

I have at least one 500 one spare, that's had a 'keeper' on it in storage, to keep its magnetism
Would you email me, as Im not on here all the time

Thanks

I have 4-5 flywheels here, they all look the same but all of them have different numbers. For as far as I know they can fit any type 350 or 500/501 (correct me if I am wrong), except for the very first series 3 1/2-flywheels. I am wondering what the different numbers mean.... (maybe this should be a different topic? ;) )

As far as I know the last ones ending in ....97 and ...98 do have the strongest magnets. Behind the ...97, ...98 sometimes there is another bigger number that don´t count.

The very last one ...98 have all these marks: PMS1 and PMS2, ANT1 350 and ANT2 350, ANT1 500 and ANT2 500. But there maybe also ...98 that don´t have all these marks, as a friend told to me. My ...98 do have all the marks.
I´ve been after them for years and happy to use them in Rocinante, Dulcinea without the Starter rim and in a future also in the Frankenstein 500/501 projekt with E-starter. These ...98 must have been in the last models before the Kokusan that also used the "bodyless" 200W alternator (Camel 501, Kanguro X3, Excalbur501 and 350).

The "modern"flywheels with the air shovels that, if I´m not wrong, came up with the 140W alternators and the electric starter have quite diferent weights (even those of the same number seem sometimes not to be of the same weight).

A higher weight might help for a lower tickover in a 500 and helpful for enduro-use, a lighter one to raise rev. Anyhow you should control if the Ignition marks are for 350 or 500 and mark the marks yourself if not marked as requiered

The real treasures are located underneath my bed (my wife is delighted) and not in the garage so I can offer some more information:

Measured with a caliper (not the circumference on the flywheel!)
Distance between PMS and ANT 350: 43mm
Distance between PMS and ANT 500 : 37 mm
So it´s quite easy to see if you have a 350 or 500 flywheel in your hands.

The 500 flywheels are suposed to be heavier than the 350, the ...97 and ...98 suposed to have stronger magnets. But who knows what had happened before, falling down or overheating will reduce the magnetism.

my flywheels
...96 with starter rim obviously for 350: 1798 gr
...98 with starter rim all marks for 350 and 500: 1907 gr.
...98 without starter rim (eliminated) all marks: 1616 gr.

a friend mentioned in La Straga in 2012:
...95 with rim for 500: 2680 gr
...95 without rim for 500: 2429 gr
...96 without rim for 350: 1524 gr
...97 without rim for 500: 2637 gr
...98 with rim for 350: 1931 gr
...98 with rim for 350: 1921 gr
his ...98 only had marks for 350!

Some of my friends have given to remagnetize their flywheels ... all without satisfying results
If you have to choose between two flywheels you can try to "feel" their magnets for example by lifting them with to chisels. or something like that. The better way is to measure the AC voltage of the green cable at idle. There should be at least 90V AC (if the coil is ok). Trying the two ones you will see, which one has the better magnets

Well, there is a lot of info there!
Btw if you eat enough steak those magnets will keep you in bed all day ;)

There really is a lot of information there, thanks. And further evidence that the flywheel from the 500s (97 + 98) are heavier is reassuring. Still looking for one, and the bike is entered in the MCC's Exeter Trial in January when it'd nice to test the theory that the heavier flywheel would provide better low down tractability for those slippery sections.
