MORE 500 Engine parts wanted

Post by simonnorthroad »

Can some kind soul spare:
Oil filter (same as 350)
Oil filter cover (ditto)
Good used clutch centre 350 or 500 (mine is too notchy to file really)
500/501 helical oil pump drive gear that goes on the mainshaft and is held on by the 4 point nut

I have engine/chassis parts to possibly swap if you'd prefer
Message me on here, text 07788442155 or email: moriniboy23@yahoo.co.uk
TIA
Simon (in the UK)

Simon,

I have those smaller (14.04.02) and the bigger helical (14.04.01) gears NOS.

Might have a good looking clutch centre somewhere, but i think one or two of the bolts need repairement.

If you know, or are, a good welder, then this will be no problem at all.

The clutch center of the 350 and 500 are not the same, because the primary gear shaft of the 500 is thicker.
The rest of the clutch is the same but not the clutch core.

@ Norbert, good to know... what i have is indeed a 350 clutch centre

Also the helical gears, we found out that they have different part number for 350/ 500, and that they are indeed different parts/ have a bigger centre also, to slip on the thicker crank of the 500cc.

Sorry Simon, seems that i have messed you about

And yet the clutch centre goes on a crank-end spline not the differing size crank-mainshafts of 350 and 500. Youd have thought Morini, with their fondness of not-making-two-parts-when-one-will-do, would use the same splines/clutch centre on 350 and 500
Oh well every day is a school-day at ECOLE MORINI.
Always pleased to hear from you Tom and have a virtual stroll through your EU Morini parts-mountain
Im going off to compare my 350 and 500 cranks and double check the 350 clutch centre wont go on the 500 splines

Yes, that's exactly what i was thinking, the learning process is endless, untill you reach higher ground...if that's possible with Morienieey's?

I have the filter, but give it a clean first to see, and yes one cap, no problemo, check.

They say the Morini 350 was designed as a 500, and then downgraded for the Italian market/ 350cc tax limit...

But, making a shaft and crank with the available tools and then later retooling everything for the 500cc, that's double the work involved?

Don't want to tackle the Meastro (who am I...) the v-twin still is a incredible and robust engine...and i think it says a lot about the quality the man put into making the 500cc?

Although you can't say the design was 'bulletproof'; the 500cc cylinder head...they can crack between the valve seats, and so do the 501's which was basically an improved version?

Or am i a Rookie, Morini moron, who still has a lot to learn? Well please let me learn then!

Hi Simon,

I guess it will not be easy to find that helical pinion. Maybe next week I´ll find some time to look after that helial oil pump drive. A cover for the oil filter surely will be there (a filter as well if needed).
But the 500 clutch center I have I must keep as a spare for my two 501 motors. I wonder wether it is diferent for 350 an 500, but I know that there are models with a diferent number of "gears" (maybe coming with the change to the right hand plain berarings?)

By the way: the 500-5-gearbox is the same as for the 250T Single, so their clutch center must fit on any 500/501 motor.

All the drive train including clutch parts are interchangeable. The gears are different but as long as you change as a pair they will also fit but with a different reduction ratio. The difference with the gearbox input shaft is only for a shoulder on the 500 to be increased in diameter to 22mm hence the now unobtainable bearing. the rest of the shaft is 20mm dia and the gear sleeve is the same as the lipped seal that fits inside the outer clutch drum is the same size for all engines. I have even found in the parts books two different part numbers in the same diagrams for the same part ie gear bush 14 04 12 for both early and late 350, 14 04 31 and 23 01 13 of the 500's the oil seal is the same a 26x35x7 but with pt nos 230412 for 350s but 230114 for the 500. also in the same parts list

I bet a barrel of Best Bitter that you cannot fit a 350 clutch center drum on a 500 primary shaft :D

Agreed, Morini mixed up partnumbers where they are actually the same part, but look on the bright side, they did not mix up all the part numbers.

I guess we will have to find a 500 mainshaft and 350 clutch centre, and bet a Bitter for it?

Too as in also. :)

Ah, Trappist beers! One is enough these days!

If Norbert drinks bitter, does he wear sandals, an Arran jumper and have a big beard? :) (Google CAMRA to enhance your education!).

Oh to be in Antwerp tonight (Royal Antwerp are playing my team Spurs).
We went to Antwerp last November for the Morini book launch, but it wasn't launched,
and now we cannot visit and collect the book or drink any Belgian beer :( :( :(
So here we stay with our bitter!

I have a number of broken 350 clutch centres with missing studs,
but I couldn't follow if they could fit a 500 or be modified to fit?
