Ignition coil resistance

Post by jeanster »

Can the resistance of the stator ignition coil be too high? I always see posts saying it should be above250 ohm & preferably 300+. Mine reads 499 ohm (admittedly on quite a cheap multimeter). It does seem ok when testing through a discharger. It's just a thought while I've got the stator off the bike.

The resistance of an original coil in good condition is approximately 220 ohm.

It is completely impossible to get 300 ohms with the original 0.15mm wire as the coil would be too big to fit, you have to use thinner 0.125mm wire.

A drop in resistance (from whatever figure you started with) indicates that the insulation is breaking down and some of the turns have shorted out.

A high resistance would indicate a poor contact or a broken winding either of which would likely give very erratic running.
