VIN Numbers

Post by spub »

I am having problems registering my 1983 500 V Sport, due to an erroneous "check digit" number in the VIN assigned to the bike. On US imports a 17 digit VIN was required on all post 1981 models. My bike has a frame number of 05906 and an engine number of 05906. The 17 digit VIN was placed on a tin foil sticker placed on the down tube. This number is supposed to have a "check digit" as the 9th number, which is based on a formula. This number is wrong for the 17 digit number assigned to the bike, as listed on the sticker. Does anyone know of a company resource that can verify that this erroneous number was the number assigned to the bike that has the foreging frame and engine number?
