500 pick-up

Post by joseb42 »

Hi yet again
Does anyone have a black ignition pick-up for sale for a 478 engine.
I suspect my red one, which is incorrect for my grey transducers, is faulty. (If anyone knows what the forward bias resistance readings should be then please let me know.)

Using a bench supply and a pair of multimeters, I'm getting 1.8v @ 21ma.

Thanks, good to know, will try to emulate tomorrow.
I am now begining to suspect my main ignition stator coil. Yes it reads 300 ohms but for two transducer coils or two timing rotor windings to fail is too much coincidence.
Your youtube clip shows an external hv psu used to simulate magneto coil. Any spec' on this so I can try to get mine firing on the bench. Even better would be a partcode for one I could buy and fit permenantly to the bike.
If it turns out to be my pick-up then I was hopeing you have heard of these, presumably they do not incorporate an extra diode, and do you think they will work with my red transducers.

NR373 (and NR373RM if necessary though might just work with my exhisting rotor)

Cheers and thanls for all your help.

Well my red pick up coils do include diodes, having checked with meter. Also forward bias resistance check gives 20mA at 1.8V on each so compatible numbers with yours.
This does mean back to suspecting coil / flywheel magnetism. Can you please help me find a way of checking flywheel and coil besides a basic resistance check. Perhaps what I really need is a substitute high votage power supply similar to that used in your you-tube video. Can you give specification as to what to use? Cheers, Joseph

I used a supply taken from a flat bed scanner.
