500 seiv / 250 crankcase compatability

Post by pistonslap »

Hi all
before wasting time , just wondering whether I can use the left hand (clutch side) crankcase cover from a 250 twin on the 500 . Also can I presume that the flywheel is also interchangeable?

The 250 twin (in common with the 125 single) has a wet clutch. I suppose you might be able to put it all together, but you end up with clutch debris in the oil, which is why they used the dry clutch in the first place.

since writing that this morning I went and had a look at the 250 engine and saw that the casing looks quite different.
How about the flywheel and generator?
Did you see my other question about the Guzzi cartridges as well Paul in the 31/2 forum?

My 350 is running a 250 stator and the 250 was running a 350 stator. I'd swapped them whilst chasing an ignition problem and never swapped them back.

You do have to watch for the early narrow rotor (fully machined, salient poles). It can only be used with the narrow stator, but you can mix the other way.

I'm pretty sure the later rotors (cast, domed shape) are all the same. The next upgrade was to the single (rather than split) phase winding and appropriate regulator.
