Fuel taps

Post by Gary D »

Hi all

My '84(ish!) 500 is fitted with 2 manual fuel taps. I'm pretty sure it would have had the electric tap fitted when new, but maybe lack of availability could explain it's being replaced by the manual item?

Anyhow...my question is does the LH tap perform the main tank function & the RH tap, the reserve? My apologies if this is a stupid question but one day, I'm going to start this beauty again & curiosity has gotten the better of me in the meantime!

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards

Originally the front left electric tap would have been the main and the back right the reserve, with both its 'on' positions performing the same function.

With aftermarket taps, who knows?

Most manual taps have 'off', 'on' and 'res' positions. The 'on' position draws fuel via an extension tube to leave reserve fuel below it, but the tube can be removed.

Perhaps a simple experiment is in order.

Great information thank you Paul. It's been a question that's been niggling me since I purchased the bike. I'm having a respray & will whip both taps out for a look at that juncture.

Many thanks & enjoy the weekend,

Gary
