Hi
I was doing a dry run of all the bits in a box against a parts manual I have and stumbled across a bit of a question. The exploded manual shows a 6 speed box and the shaft going through a ball bearing at each end (which sits in the two crank halves). My shaft is a 5 speed and have what look like a axial thrust bearings at each

and the other

The whole gear looks like this

What do these bearings go up against? Looking inside at the casings I cannot figure out what is going on. I think I am missing something, either a 'bit' or some understanding!
HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP

Have you got a copy of the service manual?
It shows the various gearbox assemblies (except the late ones).
You can download a copy from the http://www.morinispecial.it/ site. Go to Angolo tecnico, then Manuali.
Those needle roller thrust bearings run on the sides of the shaft beaing races (items 34 and 51 in the diagram). It's sort of a factory botch, but the thrust loads are minimal on a straight cut gearbox. There should be a washer/spacer to centre the thrust bearing on the plain end of the shaft.

Thanks Paul. I was working with the 3 1/2 gearbox drawing which was different. Thanks for the link it makes more sense when you look at the diagram. I agree about the bodge element of it as I have not seen an arrangement like this before.
Cases covers cylinders etc went to the vapour blast man yesterday 'I cleenz macheenze- awful name ( http://www.icmhome.org.uk/gallery.html) but a top bloke. estimated 180 for all the alloy engine bits which I guess is good for London village prices.
Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Best regards
