500 sprockets
500 sprockets
I`m thinking a future purchase might be a new set of sprockets and chain. It has 14/45 now, but could be interested in making it more road bias and going either 15 up front or down 2 or 3 on the rear.
Anyway, I have found it hard to even find stock 14 front sprockets.
Anyone got a leed on where to find some ?
I have entered part numbers in Mdina`s web store but nothing comes up.
Cheers.

Re: 500 sprockets
Hi Ross, I looked at this a couple of years back as I'm running standard 500 Camel 14/46 sprockets on my Camel fitted with a 501 engine (500/501 6 speed gearboxes have the same ratios).
But the problem is the chain clearing the rear brake drum.
There is safe clearance for a 45 tooth sprocket and a 44 sprocket might be possible but once things start to wear there might be contact with the drum on the raised castings for the sprocket screws.
The only real solutions for better road gearing on a Camel is either a different rear wheel (the 501 Camel wheel won't fit in the swinging arm) or a 500 5 speed gear box which has higher gearing.
Hope this helps and enjoy,
Ian

Re: 500 sprockets
Thanks Ian,
I think I have read somewhere that a 15 front wont fit, so I guess I will have to live with current settings.
Cheers.

Re: 500 sprockets
Does the camel take the 520 chain 'slotted' style sprocket or one with splines? NLM certainly used to have 520 14T ones so may be worth giving Mdina a ring.
I recently sourced a rare 520 13T sprocket for the hill climber from Italy:

Re: 500 sprockets
I buy toothed aluminium blanks and then machine to fit which ever rear hub. They are lighter than the steel, last just as long- not had one wear out yet aand usually cost no more than a tenner. A chap in Knighton, Powys makes them, he used to make Roger Maughling's sprockets. If you do have the 500 and not carry passengers then reducing the rear sprocket by 2 teeth makes for a much more relaxing ride. I tend to swap rear sprockets depending on what type of use the bike is going to be used for. Urban then standard, country 2 less.
I did have a chap from London ride his 350 up to me for some modifications. He complaind that he could not keep the bike going if he changed into 5th or 6th gear, turned out that the previous owner had put a 34 toothed rear sprocket on.

Re: 500 sprockets
It has a spline fitting. Quite a fine spline too.

Re: 500 sprockets
Hi Ross, there is really no problem with the bike keeping up with fast A road and Motorway traffic flow for extended periods (all day) on the standard Camel gearing even though it doesn't feel very relaxed for the engine.
You will get used to it and enjoy the acceleration.
Have fun, Ian

Re: 500 sprockets
Think your right Ian. Looking forward to my first dirt day on it. First I must get some rear shock kits and fit them. Rear feels ORRible !
Rode it to work today. Coming home a bloke pulls along side me and says my rear tail light aint workin.
Ha ha, no probs. Fix it in the morning.
Loving it.

Thanks Paul, I will look into Sprockets Unlimited if I have no luck elsewhere.
This looks promising. I have contacted them to confirm, but have had no reply. https://srtm.de/navi.php?qs=morini 2nd one down Z-14.
Cheers.
