175 Singles - Engine number prefixes

Post by bellinger3387 »

Can any of our knowledgeable members show some light on the prefixes on engine numbers for the late 50s - early 60s series of 175cc singles.
My 1962 Tresette has the prefix "F" and I have seen others with "TS" (Tresette Sport?) and also "A". My question really is are the crankcases interchangeable, as they appear the same, given the various differing location of contact breaker points etc.
Many thanks,

As far as I know, the cases are all interchangeable, but some are stronger, having extra webbing; Setebello & Tresette Sprint.

Hi I'd agree there is a lot of interchangeability. But there are differences in gearbox bearing sizes (some cases have 'blind' casings on the gearbox sprocket side, but some have bolt-on/off covers/bearing holders) while Turismos had some bronze bushes where other models had needle roller bearings (i.e. on the cam shaft, which might mean different machining. I'm not sure?). It might also be the case that iron and alloy barrel models had different crankcase aperture sizes. I seem to remember having a problems with this myself, but again not 100% sure? The bottom line is though that there is nothing that a bit of fettling can't get round.

Genuine late Settebello cases have different cam follower machining too, but I think you'd be lucky to come across a pair of those...............
