Post by TurboRestorer »

This is nearly finished, just waiting on the seat to be finished off by RK Leightons in Birmingham.

Wheels are powdercoated mercury silver & satin lacquered, the engine cases are black enemel & were done back in 1995.
Complete stainless steel exhaust & full carb. rebuild & seal. This bike will be featured on the Oil Smudges website at some point this year.

I am having running issues which the bike has had for about 20 years, slowly narrowing the issues down. Have trouble with transducers which are being changed from original Gen 1 versions to NLM versions & hopefully we're back to full power & ready for its first official bike show at Salisbury Spring Surprise on April 17th. The last time the bike was run properly was back in 2006 & its done about 40 miles since then, had it back on the road only in the last 2 weeks & had to do a cambelt change as well, as we didn't know when the belt was changed last.

I'm pretty sure I've found the issue, regulator is pushing 15.3v at 4000+ rpm & thats when everything goes wrong, rev counter starts to randomly operate upto 8000 rpm & lose rear cylinder ignition. So new regulator will be ordered soon.

The only item that links the ignition system to the battery powered circuits is the rev counter. Try disconnecting the grey trigger wire from the transducer.

The voltage regulator detects battery voltage via the brown wire, which is fed via the ignition switch. If you have a defective connection through brown wire or ignition switch, then the charge voltage can be high.

I've checked the brown wire connections are tight & the ignition switch is new, old one showed evidence of high temps. on the brown wire connection as the protective cover was distorted. I disconnected the rev counter (brown & grey wires) & still had the problem, I've also tightened up the connections at the rev counter terminals & checked at the coils as well. New regulator on order & I will check output when it arrives & see what it produces at 4000RPM.
I have an ignition problem at 3500rpm+ on both coils & doesn't matter which coil I use for the tacho, I get the same result.

Just proved it was the regulator pushing voltage over 14.8v, ran the bike without it & smooth as a babies bum, no fluctuation on RPM at all.

Something else must be going on.

As I have said before, the only thing that links the charging system and the ignition system is the tachometer (electronic).
