Regrets - I've had a few

Post by MickeyMoto »

Has anybody else sold a bike and regretted it?

I can think of two, both Morini....

500 Sport. Not the quickest, but a great all rounder...

Corsaro. Very under rated. Needed a larger tank, or better economy. Sold it because after three years I was using it with less restraint.... When you see 117 in third on a private B road, then you know it's probably wise.

The Voxan Roadster 1000. Like a huge 72 degree Morini engine but with only 100BHP not as challenging (to go silly speeds all the time) to ride as the Corsaro. Low seat and lighter than a Corsaro. Didn't handle as well, but adequate. It even got me in to 36's at Shelsley Walsh. If the factory hadn't closed I would still have it.

Er - probably every bike I've sold! Especially the Kanguro(s).

I bought a new left-over '79 Bonneville for $2495 my senior year of high school. Money got tight in college and I sold it to one of my professors. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The other one was an original '64 Bultaco Matador Mk 1.

I also regret never buying any of the Morinis I've seen for sale over the years, but I'm working to change that.

It is possible, but nature abhors a vacuum - particularly a garage space one. Having recently managed to part with two I'm consciously letting stuff other than bikes expand to fill the space available. Does mean I can get two 2Cs side by side in the warm and light of the garage to do Frankenstein monster 'heart' transplants though.

The problem is that we are all getting older and younger riders seem too few. I see a world in the future that is full of old bikes and vinyl records. At my local "Bike Shop" I caught the proprietor explaining to a journalist that the majority of his customers were in their 50's and 60's with an average collection of 3 bikes. Is that 3 of each type one wonders? Morini, Guzzi, Honda, Yama......................

I don't think Henry sold too many bikes, he's been winning on his old Duggies for many years. Doubt if he has many regrets about it either.

T160v, SVH 681P I know it's still around and of course the current owner is only really borrowing it after a weak moment back in 1980. I've still got a clutch puller for it too. All new pistons barrels big ends and main bearings after it threw a rod. Piper 3 into 1.....
Oh lamentable day.....

I often wonder where B50SS GE12659 is now. A father and son bought it in the fall of '85 with the intention of making a vintage racer out of it. I'm guessing it's in boxes or melted down by now.

(Note the missing chain and broken swingarm pivot adjuster. But that's a story for another day...)

I suppose the best thing about selling a bike is the space it leaves for a replacement. Earlier this year I sold a DR125 and within a few weeks a DR350 had appeared in it's place!
Then I decided to sell my F650GS et voila, the 250C2 appeared (mind you, the Beemer is still for sale  )
