rev limiter
rev limiter
hi all, anybody runs a rev limiter on his 350?
my ignition is fitted with a rev limiter, i set it at 8000 rpm , ( red zone on the tacho)
but i keep running into the rev limiter.
so obviously it needs more revs , but how much, what about 8500 RPM?

Hi,
I guess it depends upon the model.
8000 is peak power speed for the Strada/GT, while the Sport is peak power at 8500rpm.
The red zone finishes at 9000/9500rpm on each, so a sensible setting would be to set it at 9000rpm for a Strada and 9500 for a Sport. You shouldn't set it too low as you will hit the 'brick wall' just when you need that extra 500rpm on the overtaking!
Paul (EVGuru) has said many times in the past that his sport revs to 10000 quite happily.

I thought 8,200 was peak power for the Strada?
Obviously the ignition limit is set at an actual 8,000 rpm whilst the instrument is a guesstimate!
I'd set it at 10k, but it isn't my bike!

I thought the rev limiter was that rubber bandy thing in the engine? When it breaks it won't rev any higher...

Remove the rev limiter and fit a 250 2C tacho with an even higher red line than a Sport to salve your conscience.
I was thinking of a limiter on the Forgotten Error for when the lad ride it, but instead have positioned the tacho head so that 9000 is at 12 noon and told him to only rev it until the needle on the dial is straight up (he is a millennial used to limiters or MX 2ts). TBF with the weird reground cam it seems to run out of puff around then anyway.

Hi,
I'd look into what transducers you're using before you start talking about rev limits/limiters.
If you can find a copy of Vic Willoughby's 'Classic motorcycle engines' (or similar title - its a large format book, yellow cover) when talking to Lambertini he mentions that the transducers back-off the timing at peak revs. I did an article about it many ATGs ago, so browse your back copies and you should find it.
As such trying to get your revs up on standard units is a bit sub-optimal. If you're using something after market I'd go for 8,500-9,000. I've had my non-501 500 round to those figures easy. It's still together. In truth you probably don't need a rev limiter as the valves start floating around those revs anyway

thanks for the info, apparently the 8000 red zone on my 350 is a bit too safe.
i'm not using transducers, i'm running a programmable aftermarket ignition ,
i'll try 9000 rpm next.
