Re: New Owner with 501XE Camel

Hi, I had problems with a 501 not reving above 4,000, and after many tweaks to ignition, filters, exhaust and carbs etc the problem was solved by fitting larger main jets; the bike had standard settings in the 28mm PHBH Dellortos

Re: 501XE Camel Brake Calipers and Master Cylinders

Hi, the brakes on the 501 XE Camel are different from the later e/start Camel 501 and the Coguaro 501 Yet they all have the same rear caliper mount so the rear caliper might be interchangeable? The 501 XE Came 500 uses the same rear master cylinder as the road 500 (left rear brake/right gear change)...

Re: Fork seal orientation

Hi, your new fork seals are different to the originals, having an additional outer dust seal lip on the top/outside. There might be a problem in fitting one above another? Best to get two of the original type seals from a bearing factor to fit below the more modern fork seals or you could leave the ...

Re: Carb flooding

I'm not a fan of the vacuum tap because of fuel starvation when the engine is hot which makes starting problematic and usually needs reserve to initially get enough fuel in the carbs, especially if using the kick start.

Re: Carb flooding

Hi, each of my Coguaro 28mm carbs had two small vent elbows on the bodies just above the float bowls with hoses attached; one up to the frame clip (air vent?) and the other down past the engine (fuel overflow?). I simply removed all the elbows, hoses etc; as the 500 and early 501 Camels didn't have ...

What about the Gilardoni 400cc conversion kits for the 350, are they different?

Re: 501 camel carb jets

Hi these are the settings taken directly from Camel/Coguaro 28mm PHBH carbs Pilot 42 (original Coguaru jet 55) Starter 50 Main 76 Needle X18 (2nd groove) Atomiser BC264 Slide 40 Float Valve 250 I'm using larger main jets in my 501, started with 128 and now 124; the engine wouldn't rev with the origi...

Re: 501 camel carb jets

Hi, I don't think accelerator pumps ever were fitted to the 501 engines as they use the smaller PHBH type carb Without taking the carbs off my bike to look, I imagine that the hole is for air/petrol overflow if the float sticks? The carbs may have twol push fit small metal elbows on the main body ju...

Re: 501 sidestand switch and potted gizmo

I think it was an audible warning only for the sidestand and perhaps indicators
Never come across one that worked and often they were in the box of odd bits you get with a bike

Re: 501 sidestand switch and potted gizmo

Hi from memory the sidestand switch gets it's power supply from the back of the horn, the other wire leads to the plastic cylinder you also mention which is a warning alarm/horn. Simply remove both components and the two connecting red wires If it works keep the switch as it is the same as the brake...

Re: 500 camel airbox

Hi again, The Kanguro airbox is similar to the 501 but has right angle rubber elbows to connect to the carbs instead of solid elbows which are part of the 501 airbox The Kanguro/501 type airbox will not fit in the 500 frame Yes the 500 airbox has always been difficult to find and are often expensive...
