I'm changing the clutch seals on a 501 Excalibur due to finding the clutch bathing in i/2 a pint of oil. When checking and cleaning parts prior to refitting I found a bright steel bush O.D. 9mm, I.D 7mm, L 7mm; it was in the tray where I had put the clutch hub, push rod, seal, etc but I don't think it belongs there. It is quite possible it fell into the tray when I when I was removing some thing else such as tacho drive or starter motor clutch etc.
Doe anyone know where it belongs or even where it might possibly belong?
Thanks
Russ

That sounds suspiciously like a locating dowel for the primary case to crankcase joint. Normally two of them to centralise everything.
All donations to the rest home for old Camels, Leicestershire.

Thank you Steve for saying that, it's what I have been thinking but I did look at the case and didn't see anywhere it would fit I could have missed it of course. I also checked the parts list and it didn't list any dowels/bushes for left hand cover or the crank case but did list 2 for the for the right hand cover.
Writing the above has made me realise it's possible the gasket partially covered a larger hole so that it looked like it was only big enough for a 6mm bolt.

Found the dowels and it's not one them, they are about O.D. 12mm I.D. 8mm.
Re: and this bit goes where?
Did you have the starter sprag out from the cover in front the clutch cover as there is a spacer inside the flexible coupling which may be about that size?
Re: and this bit goes where?
I did pull the two geared shafts out of the cover one of which looks as if it has the clutch on it but I didn't separate/open the assembly and am reluctant to pull it apart to look.
Should have looked for "How to" videos before I started, the Paul Compton videos are very good and would have perhaps saved some time.
No sign of the bush/spacer/roller on any video.
