Does anything strip paint off 3 1/2 Strada engine cases

Post by Fastmongrel »

My engine cases look shabby the paint is peeling off in places. I have had a go with Nitromors Green and that might not give you cancer like the old fashioned Nitromors but it hardly touches the paint. Can you still get the paint on and watch the paint go crinkly before your eyes type of stripper.

I also tried Bartoline TX10 and I might as well have spat on the paint for all the stripping it did.

Yes, pointless isn't it. Might as well not bother selling the useless stuff.

It will need blasting with something. Glass or sand? Not shot. Obviously needs stripping.

Last time I used proper Nitromors to strip a petrol tank, I could feel the active compound, methylene chloride aka dichloromethane through my wellington boots. A really nasty and highly toxic substance.
However it was perfect as a paint stripper.

Could be worse, you could live in East Palestine, Ohio! That looked nasty. Burning vinyl chloride.

There's lots of stuff that is a pale shadow of the original. Has anyone tried to clean their hands with modern swarfega you will be better off with hot water and soap. The old Swarfega could clean your hands down to the bone.

Have them blasted it will remove all the old paint and if the grits fine enough will not damage the aluminium I am no expert but had my cases vapour blasted by Vapourworx in Swadlincote, they came back really good to say that they were probably silver painted in the factory.

carb cleaner used to contain Toluene, now its seems its xylene, which isn't as good, but Xylene used to be in Hammerite thinners and now it isn't, so I use carb cleaner to thin/clean Hammerite paints. I buy Dichloromethane for dissolving epoxy resins/glues, for which it is allowed, from a jewelery specialist supplier. My supply of 1.1.1 trichloroethane which used to be in Dabitoff dry cleaning fluid is diminishing. Eucalyptus oil is better at shifting sticky labels etc from paintwork than anything else and smells nice. Muc-Off no longer shifts chain lube off wheels etc, they have another product for that unfortunately it has dissolved my tarmac drive way. Why is everything so hard....

Try petrol, that removes paint from tanks! :)

I use Muc Off degreaser to clean the chain grease from the rear of my bike. I use it on a cloth.

Yes, it is hard because the people deciding such things never get their hands dirty.

The only stuff (of all the things I´ve tested) that worked was "Restom 4030". This is not longer available  The successor is Restom 4031. A friend of mine told me that it also works

I had two engines ice-blasted last year, wasn't cheap, but one had even the cylinders coated and that come off pretty good, you don't need to dismantle anything, some of the paint and dirt does get stuck in angles though so that needs looking after
