Hi has anyone got a gear selector casing off an engine and can have a look at how much clearance there is around the gear selector near the neutral switch. I am thinking of fitting a gear indicator( not because I need one but my Speedo has the option ) I was thinking of glueing a ring (with a magnet) on the outside of the plate which operates the neutral switch, and a ring of reed switches outside of that. But it would be nice to know if there is clearance to the casing of maybe 3mm or more and room around the plate. Thanks if anybody could have a look and see if this idea is possible or daft

not 100% sure which clearance you are referring to. Could you indicate on below photo and I will check it for you.

Thanks Robert I think that photo has already answered my question. I don’t think my idea will work. The picture from the workshop manual appeared to have more room around the selector. Thanks again.

What are you trying to achieve? Display of the selected gear number?

My Corsaro already does this and I would imagine it’s the same for all of the 1200s?

You can select gear as the displayed metric in the bottom right of the LCD by cycling through the options with the button on the dash.

If gear isn’t one of the options then you might find you can add it by entering the setup mode of the dash (with the bike off press and hold the dash button and keep it held while turning on the ignition on and it should enter setup mode)

I have the Granpasso and a 9 1/2 and haven’t noticed the option but thanks will have a look.The main problem is on the 9 1/2 the dash is bust so I’m fitting an aftermarket one with the option.

Is gear position sent to the instruments via the canbus?

Do you have a wiring diagram?

I was wondering it it is calculated from rpm and speed?

Possibly- Looking at the parts diagram it does only seem to show a ‘neutral gear sensor plate’ as opposed to a ‘gear sensor plate’

Although it would then be affected by tyre size, wear, growth and sprocket sizes. But perhaps not by enough to create overlap between gear ratios so maybe it’s not sensitive to that.

Would be interesting to see if disconnecting the wheel speed sensor causes the gear display to error.

My 2021 1200 Superscrambler has only the neutral sensor plate, the remaining gears are calculated. Occasionally it displays a dash - for unknown gear, but usually it's correct.
There are two wheel speed sensors front and rear for the ABS. Disconnecting the neutral sensor connection doesn't affect anything apart from neutral indication.
