Corsaro Down - on Compression

Post by corsaro chris »

On taking the Corsaro into NLM for a service before going to the NW200 (at 12,000 miles or thereabouts) Olly was unable to set the tickover reliably enough for his satisfaction. After trying several things the shop ended up giving me a 9.5 to get home, asking me to come back a few days later once they'd fixed it under warranty (as it had to be a component fault...).

This was at the end of April, and a few days later, having substituted everything possible (including the fuel tank to eliminate the possibility of contaminated petrol) they went back to basics and discovered that the front cylinder was low on compression. Further examination showed that an exhaust valve was chipped, allowing gasses past even when closed. Not good!

The upshot was I got an extended test ride of a 9.5 to Ireland for the NW200 - which given the rain and cold was probably not a bad result! Members of the Morini Club will get to hear more about this epic through ATG - but it certainly opens the eyes to the advantages of a touring bike that can still crack on...

I know others have complained about NLM not taking on their warranty work when they have bought a bike from another dealer, but from a purely selfish perspective I am pleased that they have been able to devote time to sorting mine out - service as it should be. All the parts required are now in and I'm hoping to get the Corsaro back shortly. The only problem is I've grown quiet fond of the 9.5 - possibly enough to make me think about that ridiculously cheap Sport sitting in Stuarts' shop with 8 miles on the clock... I'll let Forum members know more when I have the Corsaro back.

Good riding,

CC
