Hi everyone, can anyone tell me what the red wire is for only the early type alternators?
After my disaster with my Excaliber one, i am putting my original one back on (while i attempt to rebuild/rewind the busted one) and the excaliber one did not have a 'live' feed to it, just the green wire, a white earth wire and two yellows. So i'm a bit confused!
Thanks, Tony

That everybody can explain better than me

But for the Excalibur alternator you need another regulator than for the one with the red cable, that´s for sure.

Re: Whats the red wire for?
The red wire is the centre tap on the alternator winding and connects directly, or indirectly to battery positive.
It works in conjunction with the low side switching half wave rectifier/regulator.
I'm sure that makes it all as clear as mud. Most people have enough trouble with electrics, let alone electronics in slightly unusual topologies.

Wiring diagram shows the red connection on the fuse box connects ignition switch & alternator red wires.
