starter motor

Post by 3potjohn »

Forcing myself into the garage this evening rather than basking in the balmy summer sun watching sparrows searching for water etc I decided it's time to remove and renovate the stator, which had only 186ohms on the green wire last time I checked.
Having a starter motor which sort of works at least when the engine is warm I note the following.
There should be a small cam to aid adjustment of chain tension by moving the body of the motor away from the starter shoe assembly.I do not have one.Are these gettable?
I can get some sort of tension on the chain by moving the motor body anyway then retightening its securing bolts. However I then encounter some difficulty replacing a casing bolt(the long one at the back)
I have greased said chain and refreshed the oil in the motor.
What is the correct chain tension?
What do I do if it cannot be achieved? A new chain perhaps? ( I know, I know use the kickstart-but this is a hardened BMW owner here and you know what the kickstart on those is like!)

NLM may well have the cam, I'm not convinced it's needed, just helps set the chain tension before you fully tighten the bolts. I set the chain tension about midway. When I overhauled my set up I fitted the later type starter shoes which are much heavier than the originals. I seem to recall I enlarged the hole for the long bolt (either in the crankcase or the motor not sure which) by a small amount, maybe 0.5mm, due to problems with it binding on re-assembly. The main thing that made the starter fire up the bike from cold was a new gel type battery. These Oddysey batteries have 3 times the cranking power of a standard battery. Hope this helps, Neil.

Thanks for that. I already have a hawker battery,it has never let me down. I connect to a trickle charger in winter now and again but it has not been down on charge,so at least part of my generator is working. And soon the other part will too,I hope once the ignition coil is refurbished. I will accept thanks for deciding to strip the bike now and inducing summer sunshine all weekend.
