Strada MK5 Front Spindle washer

Post by funsize »

Hi all
Taken front wheel out today and am certain I’m missing the offside washer on the spindle, didn’t see it and it’s nowhere in the confined space I’m in so a bit worried. The part in question is page 50 of the green Morini Riders book (‘Disc Brake-Cast Wheel) #16 M430549 Mdina don’t have one but I know I can go somewhere to get it. If anyone can help with where it goes (I’m sure inside of fork leg, but confirmation would be good, size (does it go over fat or thin part of spindle), and is it vital-as per the book- that it’s conical. Thanks in advance 😊

This is interesting. I thought why not remove my twin disc front cast wheel and check. It has not been off for a good while. What do I find?
No washer either. Spindle goes through rh fork into speedo drive then through shouldered spacer on other side of wheel before exiting the lh fork.
There is a gap therefore. I found in my stash of washers one with a bevel of 2.75mm thickness which slotted in but the id is not sufficient to accommodate the thicker part of the spindle (22mm) This had been so since at least 2007 and very many miles.
Is there a washer conspiracy?
Someone can let us both know please.

As I mentioned recently on a similar thread, this washer is really the grease retainer for the wheel bearing, not a washer between the spindle and the bearing. If, like most owners, the wheel bearings have been renewed with sealed bearings, then the washer is 100% unnecessary. The ONLY washer on the spindle should be the one under the spindle nut!
Carry on riding without any worries!

Yes, George, it was my post in this section as I lost mine.

Interestingly, there is no washer on the left hand bearing and the rubber shows. Seems strange that one side behind the Speedo drive needs one, but the open side does not! :)

So far so good sans washer!

Well that’s solved that mystery! Got rubber seal bearings so that explains it! Just so I can retire for the evening a happy man could someone just confirm if the ONLY washer in this affair lives on the disc (inside) or nut (outside) side of the fork leg? Just to be sure 🤦🏻

For the original poster,
The washer goes under the nut on the outside of the fork leg. It is there to stop the fork leg getting mullered by the nut when it is tightened.
