speedo drive removal

I have searched for an answer to this, but can't find it.

can anyone suggest a successful method of taking the speedo worm drive off a cast wheel?

My Strada's wheels have a ruined finish, and i want to get them restored, but most powder coaters need the wheel bare. i can get the bearings out but that worm drive has me stumped.

Is the a suitable puller tool? or will heat application (either with a hot air gun or blow torch?) or alternatively cold with freeze spray loosen it enough to do the job? Replacements, i understand are unobtainable.

Your best bet if it isn't damaged or worn out is to leave it on there and make sure it is properly masked off before blasting. Then make sure that whoever refinishes your wheels knows exactly what needs blanking off. I used to do the blanking off myself until the powder coater told me that my masking tape wouldn't survive in their oven and that he would blank things off with some tape meant for the job.
You're right that they are just about impossible to find, but the temps involved in powder coating won't damage the drive.
I'd also take the trouble to mask off the disc mounting faces as even a light coating here will cause trouble. The disc needs to be bolted up tight to the cast wheel, metal to metal, and the inner diameter of the disc will also be too tight if there is any powder there. Get a good powder coater and all of this shouldn't be an issue, but talk it through with them first anyway!

I have had experience with powder coaters. My disc bolt holes were coated so had to run a tap through. Not ideal.
Laziness. A decent one should not be a problem.

I had my wheels done by AC in Yeovil. They did an excellent job of masking everywhere I asked for (including the speedo drive etc etc) and achieved a very good finish. They spectographically analysed the paint on the rim under the tyre to get the 'correct' colour too.

I was told by a very knowing morini owner not to attempt to remove the speedo drive as i would prob damage it in the process I asked him if he could remove it and the second word was off , the wheel had been painted with a matt black exhaust paint, nice! Elbow grease and wet and dry was the order of the day I primed and painted it useing air drying paint , it was a budget biker thing really but happy with it. P.s I had a lot of spare time back then. .

I seem to remember an old post saying to be careful to remove any new powdercoat that would bear on the drive when it was replaced as this extra width could split the ring when refitted.

Make sure that the powder coaters also mask off the area where you will need to refit the bearing through. Any build up here can cause the worm wheel to crack when removing/refitting the bearing.
Don't ask how I found this out many years ago!

Also make sure the area where the disc locates is also not coated.
