welding indicator lug

Post by 3potjohn »

I have to weld on a rear indicator lug which has fractured.Aside from the obvious bits I need to remove I am concerned about the electrics-Would you advise disconnection of earth points and battery or go further. I don't want anything untoward to happen.

Welding

Post by George 350 »

In the past all I have done on bikes when welding is to remove the battery from the bike. Have never had any problems with other electrical stuff.

I have had the lugs welded on my Strada - they didn't like being bungee points!
For added strength I put washers either side of the lug to give a bit of meat to the mount and welded them in as well.

Thanks for the quick replies. If after changing the car oil, decorating the upstairs and swapping a driveshaft on a R100RS I get to do the welding I will disconnect the battery. I love these days off work for a rest.

Hi,

I had to do a spot of welding on my Morini, after disconnecting the battery I also removed all connectors from the transducers and their dedicated earth connection. Better to be safe!. On the subject of welding, which I did a fair amount of on my project, on my mig welder I found I got far better performance using stainless mig wire and argon gas. The stainless wire worked fine with mild steel, and you then have a weld that won't rust. I found using mild steel wire and the co2 gas ended up with a very poor weld.

Well it's all done. I fitted some smaller mini-indicators with 10W halogen bulbs and they flash as they should. A much lighter device so the lugs should take the reduced weight much better.
A bit easier on busy roads I think, rather than sticking my right arm out and slowing down when I need to speed up.
