Treatment?

Post by mhsilverw »

Hi,

If you have an untreated engine case (assume the early 3 1/2 falls into this camp) (alloy) that is a bit oxidised what do you recommend for cleaning - ideally with the engine in place...so not a dismantling job and then off to bead/soda blast etc.

I have used solvol, belgom alu, and that sort of stuff in the past but thought I'd ask for advise...

Do I need maybe coke (head that sometimes can be used as a cleaning agent) as well as some toothpaste/concrete cleaner etc etc and maybe even green nylon kitchen pad/scourer/brillo pad ... :!:

What do you recommend? & method... :?: .

If you mean the highly-finished side covers, I just use Solvol. On the main rough-cast engine casings I've tried using a suede brush with Solvol, muc-off, Gunk and various things without much success. On dull and tarnished fork legs, fine wire wool and Solvol gently applied works well.

Good luck, Mark
