Well the sun was out so a spin down to the coast seemed in order. All OK till the the return leg.Long hill of 2 miles heading up to Exeter. just pass the service station when a loss of power quickly followed by a screech, whipped in clutch immediately and coasted to a halt.Let engine cool then freewheeled 2 miles down to the start of the M5. Nursed bike home.It ran OK but did not rev it.
Hmmm any bets on rear rings picking up?. I supposes it is necessary to renew head and base gaskets is it. What jointing compound to use?Hylomar,Drei-bond etc?
Oh well bu**er it I am off to Mallory tomorrow on my old Beemer.
Power loss and that old familiar screech
Off with the heads and barrels last evening in a rare moment of sunshine. All rings are intact but there is some evidence of the front cylinder having picked up. Not as bad as I was expecting.Bore has only a slight mark but the piston naturally has more scarring. I fancy I could see some vertical marking on the edge of one ring, in the failing light. Can someone confirm the sequence of the upper 2 rings. The top one looks like it has a slight bevel. Will confirm this evening.Don't yet know if the parts are beyond redemption.
I know the oil lubrication to the top end is down to misting. I don't know if my problem is due to a failure of lubrication as a primary or secondary phenomenon.
The old Beemer went 400miles through torrential rain to sunny Leicestershire at the weekend.

First thing this proves is that the rear cylinder does not run hotter and is not therefore the cylinder that will seize first when the engine gets hot. My Kanguro seized its front pot (see the picture in the tall tales section of the site). There was a scuff on the nikasil liner and some smearing on the piston but I just stoned the piston and put it back together and it ran perfectly well.
There is a theory that the back pot actually runs cooler as it is partly cooled by oil thrown up by the crank (visualise the crank turning and it reaches the back cylinder before the front one, after it has been in the oil).
The gaskets can be reused if you are running the alloy ones.
