Ring Nut Question ?

Hello All,
I'm taking the motor of the LSR apart and have hit a snag with the ring nut that holds the primary drive gear and the oil pump worm gear.

I've ground out a four prong tool to engage the nut from a 7/8" socket and it fits well enough, however the nut will not turn....

It is very very tight and if I use my Impact gun, I'm sure the prongs on the tool will fail.

Question: are these nuts available in the UK should I damage this one getting it off ???

Hi Robert, I haven't checked lately but think North Leicester Motorcycles sell those nut and a tool for it too. They use impact wrenches on theirs as well. If the socket you modified fits well enough and is held tightly against the job I think it should do the trick at least to remove it. Good luck anyway!

This is what I needed to know.

I'll let you know how it goes and what I find inside that the supercharger has caused so far.....

It should be interesting to see how the timing side plain bearing is doing at the current 40 rwhp level (up from the stock 26 rwhp)

At the very least make a collar to /press/shrink over the outside of the modified socket to support the prongs.

The correct tool is made so the prongs are supported radially as well as axially.

hi rob , I had a go at grinding out a socket to fit the nut , when I tried to undo the nut the pegs on the socket snapped off, the nut is very tight, I then had to buy the tool off ebay uk, or nlm will have one and a new nut which you will need, there a nylock type with a fine metric thread so only that type will go on , I cant comment on the rattle gun idea but personaly wouldn't use one, the prob you may have is stoping the crank from turning unless you have the tool to hold the primary gear, which I didn't! I used the gudgeon pin through the small end of the con rod and blocks of wood as not to damage anything which locked the crank when undoing the nut. it was very, very tight, the top end was already off so it made this possible to do, check the manual for torque wrench settings when refitting, I would use a new nut rather than chance the old one going back on. hope this is of some help. muller.

Great suggestion on shrinking an external band onto the prongs to help support them....

I have a universal adjustable pin wrench that fits the holes in the gear, but I can't steady the motor, keep the pin wrench inplace, and work the socket very well...

So, I'll get help tomorrow and see if it will come loose...

Mad Muller made a great suggestion to shrink a band around the end of the home-made four prong tool for support....

Nut is still on the crank,,, Impact gun doesn't move it...

Tool didn't break and I'm happy with that...

I gave this guy the dimensions and he made a perfect fitting castle head socket (1/2" drive) within 2 days. Mine was only £10 incl P&P; I suppose that was because it was the 'devoplment' version. Highly recommended. Only went here because NLM had no stock. I think they may also get their castle sockets from him now as I put them in touch with each other.

Don't mess about. Drill a little hole and split the nut with a small sharp cold chisel.

It is done, weakened and split the nut and the c/s is none the worst for it...

Replacement nut arrived yesterday and I then went ahead with the removal....
