Starting technique

On a different thread, Paul Compton wrote: "There is a definite starting technique. Bring it up to compression and kick it over compression and kick it fast. I find it helps to have the throttle just cracked open."
Does anyone have any tips of their own to add?
I moved to the Morini from a Triumph twin which I owned for 30 years and where a small opening of the throttle followed by a single kick worked most of the time. I have experimented with different throttle openings and blipping the throttle when kicking. I think I am kicking as hard as I can but I get the impression that the engine only fires when the kickstarter is at the very end of its travel so, in the same way that if you kick a football the swing doesn't end at the ball, there needs to be an intention to kick past the stop.
This post is really just about technique: there are plenty of others for starting difficulties linked to mechanical or electrical problems!
