eBay bargain

Post by boris tarpit »

I've just aquired a '74 strada, it'll be company for the 420 engined 250 already in the garage. It must be an early model as it has the tank with the centre fuel cap and two extra facets in it, it even has the original paint job. It's missing the instruments, the wire wheels have been changed for cast and the side panels are missing. There doesn't seem to be any provision for the clocks on the top yoke, my previous strada had the 2 8mm threaded holes but this one doesn't. Does anyone know what the set up is supposed to be?? I can't seem to find an image on the net at all.

The bike is a non runner (of course) the source coil is giving half the reading it should so that is the first thing to fix, I fancy having a go at it myself ; how many turns of what guage wire do I use??

I have rewound the ignition coil on the stator, I used 0.15mm wire from RS components but Maplin also stock this wire and approx 3,200 turns. This should give between 250-300 ohms. I have done this 4 times now once on the running stator, one on a spare and a couple on a MZ-B stator that did'nt work out. You can get it done in an evening. Be very careful removing old coil from stator plate. Also you will need to drill out the rivets holding the copper plate used to get rid of excess voltage/heat. Good luck.

Thank you for the information Robin, I'll have a go at that little job just as soon as I find my flywheel puller. . . .

Hi,
The 1st 3 1/2's had the instruments fitted in 2 aluminiumplates which where held on the top yoke by the filler caps of the fork legs. You can see a picture on my site: http://members.lycos.nl/morini/350/moto ... e_1973.pdf

Thanks for the pics and info Hans and Andre. My bike has cast wheels fitted with a rear disc brake. There was a spare swing arm with the bike this is the original one I presume, it's about 3 inches shorter than the one fitted and has a stay for a drum brake. Does this mean I have wheels from a 500 or did the K2 have a longer wheel base than earlier models??

On another note I'd like to know what cam is in my 420/250 I can't believe any Morini can rev like that on a standard cam. Is it possible to see the mark on the cam without taking it out?? The motor is supposed to have had the full works tuning wise and having ridden it I believe it but I am very reluctant to strip the motor to have a look what's been done.

How do I change the swing arm bearings in a 250?? Is it the same as three 3 1/2 ??

Hi, the K2 had originally a disk brake at the back and two on the front. Guess the spare (shorter) bridge was bought for a drum conversion at some stage but this will be pretty hard as the frame was extended to fit the longer disk brake bridge.....

The 500 was the first Morini V with a rear brake and the wheelbase was definitely longer. I have a friend with a K1 sport with tripple disks and as I recall the chain was the same length (96 links?) as my 77 Sport, so I suspect the swing arm is the same. I don't know about the K2 though.

My old 77 Sport will pull 10,000 (indicated in 5th) along the main straight at Cadwell. You can in theory see the cam mark using an inpection mirror after removing one of the barrels, but it won't tell you much if the cam is a re-grind (likely).

More or less.

The saga continues. . . . . So having decided to have a go at the rewind myself a reel of wire miraculously appears on ebay. I placed my bid and waited for the end of the auction only to be 'sniped' by a baldbutsexy. All's fair in love, war and ebay so I cheerily emailed the winner 'Oh Arthur how could you!!??' and he replied and very kindly offered to send me the wire, let me take what I needed and then send it on to him. This confirmed my previously held belief that Mr Farrow is indeed one of nature's gentlemen.

So far so good. After a short search for my flywheel puller I duly removed the stator and attempted to get the rivets out. This defeated me so I rewound it with the backing plate in place this was awkward to say the least but I persevered. At around 1100 turns there wasn't any more room to get any more wire on so I scratched the insulation off and tested the resistance. 45 ohms. Can't be right. No that's what the meter says. I thought I might have damaged the insulatuion and caused a short so I took all the wire off and started again. This time I took the backing plate off and wound a bit more carefully and as tight as I dared. The core was full at 1300 turns and the resistance shows 76 ohms. The wire I'm using is .2mm not .15mm does it make that much difference?? The bloke Arthur bought it off had used it sucessfully, am I doing some thing wrong?? Should I just send it off to George Lane and have done with it??

Yes using 0.2mm will mean you get less turns on. When using 0.15mm you have to make sure you evenly spread the windings and you should be able to get 3,200 turns on. It is also an idea to have some of the dipping varnish and glass fibre tape to line the bobbin and to wrap afterwards. The varnish is painted on and helps stop the wire moving under vibration and fracturing. The wire is readily available from maplins and the tape and varnish from RS. Hope this helps.

Yes that's the one. I've already made contact with the bloke who had the bike before the guy I bought it off. Sounds like this bike has quite a history. What's your part of the story David??

As a long time MRC member and club librarian I have photos of the bike from long ago, one is here.

I have a few others when I finally find the time to do a proper page.

Thankyou for the pics David, I thought the bike must have been built up with non standard bits after it got smashed up but those look like the wheels and pipes it still wears. It's a bit of a frightening coincidence as I had it in mind to do something like that with it, I remember a 3 1/5 flattracker advertised in Bike magazine small ads around 1982 that looked a lot like this one could be the same bike y'never know. According to the previous previous owner the bike had a visit to Benjy Straw who remembered it being raced on the Isle of Man way back.

Can any one tell me how to tell 500 cyl heads from 350?? The heads have certainly been gas flowed very nicely. I'l get a timing disc on it and see if I can work out what cam is in there, watch this space for updates. . .

Boris
Come along to the Berkshire meeting of the MRC tomorrow night (Wed) at The Bell at Aldworth near Reading and I can show you the original photos and fill you in on some more history of the bike. The weather should be nice for a run out and they sell a very nice pint of Mild which you could probably risk one of with no effect at all.
500 heads have larger exhaust ports and nuts.

Reading is a bit of a trek for me I'm afraid but thanks for the invite anyroad. SHE270 does indeed appear to have 500 heads fitted. . . . I've ordered some.015 wire and will have a third attept at rewinding the stator when it comes, meanwhile I think I'l have the flywheel remagnetised.

I've been looking thru my old Bike magazines for that ad I mentioned, I'm sure it must be the same bike, I'm in two minds whether to restore it back to original or back 1985 flattracker spec. . . .
