Rev Counters

A Question:
Paul Crompton quotes in an earlier posting that for a Sport "The rev-counter should red-line at 8500, rather than 8000".
Now I've had my 1978 Sport from new, and mine came fitted with a (and it still has the original) tacho with an 8000rpm red line.
So, does this mean that mine was another case of 'fitting what they had around at the time' or did the red line get reduced on Sports at some stage so that mine is correct?
Doesn't bother me, but would be nice to know.
George.
