crankshaft oilseal

i have a oil leak coming from behind the generator. can i replace the oil seal in the crankcase behind the generator without a complete engine strip down :?:if so what size oil seal do i need

The seal is a 30x40x07mm and can be changed without stripping the engine.
However, an oil leak there might not be good news. It could indicate a worn main bearing. With an early engine (up to 1976 or so) there should be no play in the crank because the bearing on the timing side is a ball race. Later engines have a plain bearing and there should by a small amount of clearance.

thanks EVguru. my 3-1/2 is a 1978 sport with 12000 on the clock which i believe is correct

paul i have just thought if the main bearings had gone on one side the engine would be noisyer

just replaced the right hand side ( as you sit on the bike) crankshaft oil seal a very easy job
